Dianne Blell and Leo Castelli
Lives and works in New York City & Bridgehampton, NY
Dianne Blell is a Fine Art photographer working in New York City and Bridgehampton, NY. Using both her favored 4x5 large format and also a Digital Canon in her current body of work, "Artifacts of the Contemporary" (2019), she is enlivening long collected fragments, frayed furnishings and ephemera her from past studio and set designs. This series is currently being shown in select galleries; most recently at M&M Fine Art in Southampton, New York.
Dianne began shooting large format 4x5 film in early 1980. In her most well-known and exhibited works, she constructed and hand-painted the life-size photographic background sets for her narrative photographs in her Bridgehampton and NYC studios. In 1989 Dianne received a National Endowment for the Arts Collaboration Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography for a series based on her pioneering work in early digital scanning techniques and her 4x5 photography in working collaboration with Applied Graphic Technology’s Quantel Graphic Paintbox software. This art-technology experimentation was covered extensively in art publications (i.e. Art in America Photo and District News), and software and tech magazines of the time. Her work is best described as an early pre-cursor to Photoshop, involving the complex narrative layering of individual photo scans in a (then) rudimentary software editing program.
During the second half of her Guggenheim Fellowship, with equipment support from Canon USA, she shot 35mm film using their Canon EOS 1 while in the field photographing wildlife in Africa. While working in Africa she and her work appeared on ABC photographing Richard Leaky during his Interview with Diane Sawyer on 20/20 ABC, National Geographic, Mirabella, Elle, Geo. Outside, and many other wildlife publications, books and Calendars. Continuing to use 4x5 Film and a View camera, she was an early adopter of Photoshop, and her photo-manipulated, mytho-scape series "Desire for the Intimate Deity" was completed in the 2007. This work took her nearly a decade to complete after her studio — located at Ground Zero adjacent to the WTC — and its contents were destroyed in 9/11. Once a shooting location for her early work, her photos of the aftermath of this tragedy were photographed from the rooftop of and through her studio windows — some of these images are now included collection of the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
Dianne Blell was formally with the prestigious Leo Castelli Gallery from 1982, where she had four one person exhibitions, until its closing in 2000. Her "Desire for the Intimate Deity" series was shown at Charles Cowles Gallery, NYC, and the Holden Luntz Gallery, Palm Beach, Fla. in 2008. Dianne is now permanently affiliated with the esteemed photography venue, Holden Luntz Gallery, where she has exhibited several bodies of work from her large scale Narrative Mythological Compositions since 2008. Her work is in the collections of the Parrish Museum; Guid Hall of East Hampton; The Metropolitan Museum; Chazen Art Museum at University of Wisconsin; Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY; New Britain Museum of Art, Connecticut; Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; Lannan Foundation, Sante Fe and others.
