Desire for the Intimate Deity

2000 - 2008

The underlying current driving my work is the photographic rendering of the compelling forces of yearning, desire and the affinities at play in the romantic pursuit of the ideal in love, myth, religion, and their archetypal visual representations in art history. This series investigates the universality of the idealized stages of courtship in the socio-ethnic and religions-based mythology of Hindu folklore between Rada and Krsna, as archetypes of the eternal human condition in the “pursuit of love” and their search for the ideal union with the “divine.” The narrative-staged photographs were produced, designed, painted and constructed in my NYC studio. The background sets, figures and details are photographed separately in large format 4x5 film and then digitally assembled in the final narrative compositions.
